Complex just lately spoke with AEW superstars Matt and Nick Jackson (The Younger Bucks) about their love of basketball sneakers, and the way the brothers imagine they began the pattern of wrestlers sporting sneakers throughout matches. Highlights are beneath.
On their first introduction to sneakers
Nick: For me it was the Harmony 11s. I just about personal each single one in all them at this level. I feel as a result of Bret “Hitman” Hart wore the same [silhouette].
Matt: Being 90s children, it was all about Michael Jordan. We simply needed to be Jordan. And we have been poor children and couldn’t afford any of the footwear. So we’d see all our mates sporting [Jordans] and can be so jealous. So now we’re like, “We will afford these footwear that we used to actually need as a child? Let’s purchase all of them!
On the response to them wrestling in Dior Jordan 1s:
Matt: We have been turning heel. I instructed Nick, “What’s the one factor we are able to do that may piss off so many individuals?” I’ve been obsessive about the [Dior Jordan 1s] since they got here out. I stated, “What if we purchase these and wrestle in them?” I knew it’d be an enormous factor, however I didn’t realize it’d be as massive of a deal because it was. We discovered one thing actually distinctive. From that time on, any pair of footwear we wore to the ring, we constructed a fancy dress round them.
On beginning the pattern of sporting sneakers in wrestling:
Nick: I really feel like we really made it a pattern. When you look on Instagram or Twitter or any social media, you’ll see wrestlers in sneakers, and that wasn’t a factor 3 or 4 years in the past.
Matt: Shane McMahon might have been the primary to do it, however I don’t assume all of the wrestlers have been copying it. So perhaps Shane is the OG however we helped make it fashionable.
